It’s no secret that my favorite thing to do is paint portraits. My goal when painting a portrait is to connect the subject to the viewer, and to bring the subject alive. Whether I’m capturing a moment in time, like a wedding, birthday, celebration, or memorial, I love getting behind the public mask and finding the soul within.

I’m available for a limited number of commissions during the year. Please contact me at info@margaretsloan.com for more information.

Testimonial from Angeline

A few months after my mother passed away in early 2021, I commissioned Margaret Sloan to paint a portrait of her from a photograph that I thought had a good sense of her personality and warmth.

Margaret communicated frequently and clearly throughout the process and asked some excellent questions - not only about details like eye color and background colors but about what she liked to be called and what she was like as a person. We had several check-ins while the pencil drawing was completed and then a couple more after the painting began. Margaret was open to some small changes that I asked for when the painting was nearly completed, and mailed it promptly and with excellent protective packaging. I am absolutely delighted with the result and can't put it much better than...it just feels like that's my mother looking back at me, about to say something silly and funny that will make us all laugh one more time.

 Process

In the best of all possible worlds I would meet the person, talk to them, and take photos. But I realize that’s not always possible. I can paint from a photo you provide, but I’ll have to take a look first to see if it’s possible. Not all photos work for a portrait.

I’ll work with you to find the feeling that best suits your person. I’ll send you regular updates along the way to make sure I’m on the right path. And I’ll probably learn to like your person a whole lot as I move through the stages of painting their portrait.

Price

Portraits start at $400 for an 8” x 8” or 8” x 10” painting with a single subject. Larger sizes and more figures are subject to negotiation.
